An Academic’s View

Dr Lindsay Smales is a senior lecturer in planning and surveying at Leeds Metropolitan University and a Todmorden resident who often works with Todmorden Pride. In this article he provides his opinion on the Sainsbury's planning application and for context, we also publish a report from Dr Smales from 2005 relating to the same site.

Below are two documents from Dr Smales.

The first is a response to the Advice Report of Nicholls Associates (as Submitted to CMBC in July 2011). Calderdale Council's planning officers used that report in the planning meeting on the 9th August. The second is a design brief commissioned by Todmorden Pride from 2005.

Much has changed on Halifax Road since then but the design brief may provide some context as to what efforts have gone before to regenerate the area and provide some insight as to current proposals such as a marina.
